Ballet
Ballet originated in Italy and was developed in France during the 17th Century. It is the classical form of theatre dance and places great emphasis on 'line' and grace of movement. Ballet is excellent for improving posture, agility and flexibility. Classes begin with exercises at the Barre which strengthen and stretch the muscles. It is followed by Centre work, Adage - slow movements which develop balance and control and then by Allegro - faster steps which improve elevation and exactness of movement.
Tap
Tap Dance developed in America during the 19th Century and was influenced by Irish jigs, English clog dances and the musicality of African rhythms. Performers wear shoes with metal plates attached to the toe and heel areas. As the dancer moves, the plates click against the floor making a tapping sound. Tappers create a wide variety of rhythms with their feet and combine this with body movements to produce Tap Dancing. Although you start slowly, Tap is traditionally a quick dance and will help to improve stamina and agility.
Jazz
Jazz Dance, alongside jazz music began in New Orleans in the United States. At first it was mostly performed in a social setting but over time the movements and steps became more stylised and started to appear in Broadway shows. Jazz dance uses isolations, syncopation, contractions and some classical steps. Classes begin with Warm Up, Barre, Arms, Centre, Limbering and Across the Floor exercises before progressing on to full dance routines. Jazz will give your body a good workout and develop strength and flexibility.
